The Shibusawa Eiichi denki shiryo (Shibusawa Eiichi Biographical Materials) is a compilation of primary sources in 68 volumes (58 main volumes, 10 supplementary volumes) comprising roughly 48,000 pages. It covers not only the personal achievements of Shibusawa Eiichi but also private-sector diplomacy, the economy, philanthropy, society, education, religion, and culture in Japan from the end of the Edo period through the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras.
The digital version of the Shibusawa Eiichi denki shiryo has been newly updated, with the supplementary volumes (supplementary volumes 1-10) now added to the previously available main section (volumes 1-57). The supplementary volumes include materials such as Shibusawa Eiichi's diaries, correspondence, talks, lectures, calligraphy, and photographs. Along with the main section, containing Eiichi's achievements in chronological order divided by field, the rich contents of the supplementary volumes can now be searched and viewed online.
Additionally, copyright status has been provided for all items, with the status of rights clearly displayed for each. We ask that you reference the source when using these resources.
It is our hope that by simplifying and improving access to the Shibusawa Eiichi denki shiryo we can increase its usefulness as a resource of information on Shibusawa Eiichi and early modern Japan. We hope it will be used widely.
