Thematic Exhibition Series "Thinking of Peace" Shibusawa Eiichi and the Friendship Dolls: The Doll Project 81 Years Ago

The series aims to encourage visitors to think about world peace today by introducing Shibusawa's lifelong devotion to international peace and understanding. The first exhibition in this series will shed light on the history of the US-Japan doll exchange project in 1927 by exhibiting 8 of the 10 blue-eyed dolls remaining in Tokyo.

This special exhibition marks the 10th anniversary of the three museums in Asukayama Park, the Shibusawa Memorial Museum, the KitaCity Asukayama Museum, and the Paper Museum. Shibusawa Eiichi's public and Private lives are presented through a look at the Oji and Takinogawa area (Asukayama), the Location of Eiichi's second home from 1879 to 1901, and then his primary home until his death in 1931.

New Display: Letters on the Doll Exchange Project

Letters regarding the Doll Exchange Project between Japan and the United States will be displayed at the section 8 of the permanent exhibition, Broad Circle of Acquaintances, during this period.

Shibusawa Eiichi was involved in the project in the 1920s that aimed to promote peace and friendship between two countries through the exchange of dolls.

New Exhibition: Tanabe Junkichi - The Architect behind the Bankoro and the Seien Bunko

Tanabe Junkichi was a popular architect during the Meiji and Taisho eras (1868-1926). He designed the Bankoro and the Seien Bunko in honor of Shibusawa Eiichi. Through artifacts donated by Junkichi's family, this exhibition explores both the man and his work.

The Bankoro and the Seien Bunko - Important Cultural Properties

In December 2005 the Bankoro Cottage and the Seien Bunko Library, located on the site of the former residence of Shibusawa Eiichi, were designated as Important Cultural Properties by the Japanese government. These two structures were singled out from nine designated buildings as worthy of special mention because of their "superiority in design." Both buildings were designed by Tanabe Junkichi, a famous Taisho era (1912-26) architect influenced by the arts and crafts movement.
